Markmið
Stefnt skal að því að nemendur:
• Geti hlustað á margvíslegt efni sem ekki er endilega ætlað til enskukennslu (raunefni), dregið út upplýsingar og tileinkað sér ný orð.
• Geti tekið þátt í almennum samræðum á ensku, t.d. innan kennslustofunnar við skólafélaga og kennara sem og við enskumælandi fólk eftir því sem tækifæri gefst til
• Geti lesið margvíslegan texta, t.d. óstytta bókmenntatexta ætlaða enskumælandi fólki, aðgengilega fræðitexta af ýmsum sviðum og almennt efni í blöðum, tímaritum og á Netinu.
• Geti skrifað um fjölbreytt efni, t.d. í formi rökfærsluritgerða og ýmissa styttri ritaðra texta.
• Kunni skil á grundvallaratriðum enskrar málfræði.
• Geti notað orðabækur sér til gagns og ekki einungis til að komast að merkingu orða heldur einnig varðandi notkun þeirra, orðflokk og framburð.
Námsfyrirkomulag
Í beinu framhaldi af námi í grunnskóla eru undirstöðuatriði enskrar málfræði, sérstaklega þau atriði sem reynast íslenskum nemendum erfið, rifjuð upp í efnislegu samhengi við aðra þætti námsins. Áhersla er lögð á vandlegan lestur texta með það fyrir augum að byggja upp virkan og hagnýtan orðaforða. Hraðlesið efni valið við hæfi nemenda. Markvissar hlustunaræfingar. Enskt talmál æft m.a. í tengslum við lestrar- og hlustunarefni. Skriflegi þátturinn þjálfaður með fjölbreyttum æfingum í tengslum við þá efnisflokka sem unnið er með. Nemendum leiðbeint í notkun orðabóka. Lesnar eru smásögur og skáldsaga sem hæfa getustigi nemenda. Ýmis önnur verkefni sem sameina eiga alla færniþætti tungumálsins og byggja upp almennan og sérhæfðan orðaforða eru unnin jafnt og þétt á önninni. Námsmat fer fram í formi prófs í lok annar ásamt ýmsum verkefnum og prófum á önninn.

§ increase their vocabulary, both literary and general, by reading and listening to English
§ develop abilities to read various articles and interpret literature critically
§ write clear, effective sentences and well-developed paragraphs
§ develop argumentative writing skills
§ communicate in English with confidence

Course Description:
Students read short stories and the novel Killing Mr. Griffin by Lois Duncan. Grammar will be reviewed in connection to other parts of the course with the aid of exercises in Blueberry Porridge, and students use the interactive grammar website http://www.bhs.is/porridge to test their knowledge. Students will also read texts and do assignments in Blueberry Porridge and on various handouts, as well as films, audio and oral assignments. Students will write one A5 page diary to be handed in at the end of every week. Students are required to use English in class. Late assignments lower the grade.
Evaluation:
- The final exam in December counts 50% and the term grade (see table below) counts 50%.
- Students must pass the final exam for the term grade to count.
